Military officers should be allowed to take decisions in war-like areas, the govt said. “Military solutions are to be provided by military officers, not through comments of politicians. How a situation is to be dealt with when you are in a war-like zone… we should allow our Army officers to take a decision,” defence minister Arun Jaitley said. The remarks are a political message as they come in the context of criticism that the “human shield” episode in J&K was a violation of human rights and that the government was “politicising” the incident.

UP govt suspended Saharanpur’s district magistrate and senior superintendent of police. Government’s surprise move came as fresh rounds of violence continued in Saharanpur yesterday, leaving one more dead and several injured. A total of 24 people have been arrested for Tuesday’s violence while the district administration has directed telecom companies to suspend internet services in the trouble-torn region. The caste violence has also led to a political slugfest in the state.
The Madras High Court stayed all further proceedings with regard to NEET. This order may throw the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET) schedule for MBBS and BDS admissions off the track. The interim order restrains the CBSE from continuing with the evaluation of answer scripts, releasing answer key and result declaration. While answer keys were slated for release on May 31, results were to be out on June 8. CBSE officials said they were “seeking legal opinion on the case”.

Lucknow’s CBI court will frame charges against Advani and others in Babri case. The court, which started hearing in the Babri demolition case last week, would frame charges against LK Advani and 11 other BJP and RSS leaders for their alleged role in conspiracy behind the razing of the structure on December 6, 1992. While the CBI court had dropped conspiracy charges against the leaders in 2001, the Allahabad HC had upheld the order in 2010. The CBI, however, moved the SC which in its April 19, 2017 order, asked the CBI court to add conspiracy charges against the accused in the trial.
The father and younger brother of the suspected Manchester bomber were arrested. The counter-terrorism force detained them yesterday in Tripoli, Libya. While the brother was arrested on suspicion of links to the Islamic State, the reason for father’s arrest was not given. The attack, which killed 22, was the latest in a series of deadly incidents across Europe claimed by IS that have coincided with an offensive on the group’s redoubts in Syria and Iraq carried out by US, British and other Western forces.
