The launch of indigenous rocket GSLV Mk III, nicknamed ‘fat boy’ will take place on June 5. The GSLV Mk III, which is said to be as heavy as 200 fully grown elephants, would pave the way for India’s first manned mission as it would make Isro capable of sending humans into space. Currently, only three countries–US, Russia and China– have the capability of launching manned missions. Development of the GSLV Mk III began in early 2000s.

The government is confident that the NDA candidate will sail through the presidential poll. Sources claim that the NDA camp has already stitched up 54% of votes in the electoral college. The total value of votes in the electoral college for the presidential poll is 10,98,882 with the majority mark at 5,49,442. Another top party source claimed that there was “movement towards the NDA” and the “momentum will soon be visible”.
Terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen identified Riyaz Naikoo as its new commander in Kashmir. At 29, Naikoo is the oldest surviving militant of the outfit. Tech-savvy Naikoo is considered a moderate among the hardline Hizbul militants and favours a secular society in the valley. The development comes a day after Hizbul commander Sabzar Bhat was killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir’s militant-infested Tral area.

A video showing 14 youths molesting two girls in a UP village went viral. The video, shot in broad daylight in a village near Rampur, triggered an outrage in the state where the incidents of crime have seen a spurt recently. In the video, the girls are seen objecting to the assault and trying to defend themselves while they are surrounded and groped by the assailants, who also filmed the act and put it on Facebook. Police have arrested the main accused after registering a case against 14 youths who have been identified.
Army is building requisite deterrence along the 4,057-km Line of Actual Control with China. The 1.3-million strong Army has now kicked off the process to raise the second division of the new mountain strike corps for the “northern borders” with China despite an ongoing fund crunch, while it is also planning a high-altitude warfare exercise in Ladakh later this year. Defence sources say the new 72 Infantry Division, with its headquarters at Pathankot, will become “fully operational” in three years.
