Seven people were killed as violence broke out in several parts of the country today due to anger over SC/ST Act ruling by Supreme Court. A ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by several organisations today, and supported by some political parties, saw security forces clashing with protesters with reports of vandalism, stone-pelting and firing by police in not just Madhya Pradesh but also in the states of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh. The Centre has asked the states to take preventive steps and maintain public order to ensure safety of lives and property.

The Supreme Court has declined an urgent hearing of plea on the ruling to do with the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Earlier today, the Centre had filed a plea in the top court seeking the restoration of the earlier status by which any offence under the SC/ST Act was made a cognizable non-bailable offence. The Supreme Court had last month barred automatic arrests on complaints filed under the SC/ST Act. It also said a preliminary inquiry must be conducted by police within seven days of an alleged incident before taking any action.
A special aircraft carrying the mortal remains of 38 Indians killed in Iraq arrived at the Amritsar International Airport today. The aircraft with the remains of the 38 slain Indians, out of 39, landed at Amritsar from Baghdad around 2:30 pm. The presumed remains of one of those killed were yet to be positively identified. Out of these, 27 belonged to Punjab while four hailed from Himachal Pradesh. The rest of the bodies would be flown to their respective places in Patna and Kolkata to be handed over to their relatives.

Direct tax collection has exceeded the target with a record 6.84 crore income tax returns filed in 2017-18, officials said today. Direct tax collections in 2017-18 at Rs 9.95 lakh crore, exceeded the revised budgetary target of Rs 9.8 lakh crore. Also, 6.84 crore income tax returns were filed in the year against 5.43 crore in the previous year, signalling a rise of 26 per cent, CBDT Chairman Sushil Chandra said, adding, the net collection from corporate tax went up 17.1 per cent while that from personal income tax rose 18.9 per cent.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal today apologised to Union finance minister Arun Jaitley in a defamation case he had filed against him. Joining Kejriwal in the apology were three of his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) colleagues – Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha and Ashutosh. Jaitley has accepted the apology, reported ANI quoting sources. Jaitley and Kejriwal have moved a joint plea before a Delhi court seeking to settle the criminal defamation case. Additional chief metropolitan Magistrate said the court will take up the application tomorrow.
