Weightlifter Sanjita Chanu won India a second gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games (CWG). The 24-year-old from Manipur also broke the CWG record with a lift of 84kg in the snatch category, and then lifted 108 kg in the clean & jerk to finish with a combined effort of 192kg. The defending champion, Loa Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea, won the silver. Sanjita had booked a spot at the 2018 CWG after taking a gold in the women’s 53kg with a total lift of 195kg (85kg+110kg) at the Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championships. Read more

US President Donald Trump has claimed he has no knowledge of any payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels. In doing so, Trump broke a two-month silence about allegations he slept with the porn star and paid her $130,000 to keep it secret. The actress – Stephanie Clifford, who goes by the screen name Stormy Daniels – claims it was money paid to cover up a tryst with Trump more than a decade ago. Trump’s long-time lawyer Michael Cohen has admitted to making the payment but has not indicated why he made it. He has also accused Daniels of breaching a non-disclosure agreement.
The Supreme Court has told the Centre that Aadhaar cannot stop bank frauds. The apex court stopped the Centre on Thursday from projecting Aadhaar as a panacea for all systemic ills – including bank frauds worth billions of rupees – and said the unique number as a tool for authentication of identity could not stop bank scams even if it might be useful in uplifting the poor. A bench of justices protested when told that Aadhaar could prevent bank frauds, a phenomenon much in discussion due to the cases of fugitives Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.

Actor Salman Khan’s bail hearing will be held today at 11.30am. The actor was yesterday found guilty of killing blackbucks and sentenced to five years in prison. His lawyer immediately applied for bail. Pending the bail hearing, Salman was sent to Jodhpur Central Jail, where his neighbour is the rape-accused, self-styled godman Asaram Bapu. Other fellow convicts there include Shambu Lal Raigar, the infamous hate-killer of Rajsamand, and Malkhan Bishnoi, a former Congress MLA and an accused in the murder of ANM Bhanwari Devi.
The CBI yesterday questioned ICICI Bank chief Chanda Kochhar’s brother-in-law. CBI sources said there was no lookout circular against Kochhar’s husband’s brother, but that he was intercepted by immigration authorities at Mumbai airport around 11 am on specific information from the anti-corruption agency. Sources said they felt the need to question him about allegations pertaining to his company, Singapore-based company Avista Advisory’s dealings with ICICI Bank. Chanda Kochhar’s husband Deepak Kochhar is also likely to be soon called for questioning, said sources.
