| The Supreme Court has advised the government to appoint lokpal at the earliest. The apex court said appointment of lokpal and its members by the selection panel, without including the Leader of Opposition, would be perfectly valid under the existing law. The Centre, explaining why the appointment had been delayed, cited that under the relevant rules, for a party to be recognised as opposition, it ought to have one-tenth strength of the 542-strong Lok Sabha — a threshold no party could cross in the 2014 elections. |

| India ranks fourth in online security breaches, a Symantec study has revealed. The US and China occupy the top two slots and together make for almost 34%, followed by Brazil and then India, which accounts for over 5% of global threat detections. While China has managed to bring down hacks from nearly 24% in 2015 to under 10% in 2016, India saw instances of fraud increase from 3.4% in 2015 to 5.1% in 2016. |

| AIADMK (Amma) leader T T V Dhinakaran was taken to Chennai and his residence searched in connection with the EC bribery case. The Delhi Crime Branch police personnel searched the residences of Dhinakaran and that of his associate Mallikarjuna. The police had secured warrants from a Delhi court to conduct the searches which were part of efforts to gather ‘further evidence’ in the alleged attempt by Dhinakaran to bribe EC officials. The police, however, did not state whether any seizures were made. |
| China is planning to extend the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan for global anti-terror role. The move, if successful, will put China at the centre of the international war against terrorism. It will also enhance its negotiating capability with India and the US, observers said yesterday. The extension has been planned to pressurise Pakistani army to cut off cross-border links between the Taliban and Islamic terrorists in Xinjiang. |
