BSP MLA Anil Singh claimed today that he had cross-voted in favour of the BJP in the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha polls. Deputy leader of the BSP legislature party Uma Shankar Singh also said he cannot be sure that Anil Singh had voted for the BSP candidate Bhimrao Ambedkar. The Unnao MLA’s vote could be crucial as it gives BJP the edge in getting a ninth Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh. The Delhi high court today restored membership of 20 disqualified AAP MLAs and referred the case back to the Election Commission (EC). The Court said the disqualification of AAP MLAs was bad in law, and therefore remanded their plea back to the EC which will hear it afresh. The court further said there was a violation of natural justice and no oral hearing was given to the AAP MLAs before disqualifying them as legislators. On January 19, the EC recommended that the AAP MLAs be disqualified for holding offices of profit.
The United State’s new National Security Advisor (NSA) John Bolton believes Pakistan does need to be dealt with firmly, but the US needs to strike a balance in the matter. Bolton – a former US ambassador to the UN – opined that Pakistan, a nuclear weapons state, is perpetually teetering on the brink of embracing Islamic extremism and terror. And pushing it too hard could well lead to it becoming “a terrorist country with nuclear weapons”, or as Bolton described it last August to Breitbart.com, “Iran or North Korea on steroids”.
