Massive anti-IPL protests erupted in Chennai yesterday with scores of activists, including film directors, being detained. One incident of protesters burning yellow jerseys, the attire of Chennai Super Kings players, was witnessed. Two activists belonging to a pro-Tamil outfit threw a shoe into the ground when the Chennai Super Kings-Kolkata Knight Riders match was in progress at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, police said. Pro-Tamil groups had given a boycott call of the Indian Premier League, alleging that the game was being organised to divert attention from the raging Cauvery protests across the state. |

The Supreme Court yesterday told the Centre that even if it upheld the unique identity number (Aadhaar) scheme, biometrics collected at the time of enrolment of a resident of India would have to be non-invasive. A five-judge constitution bench referred to Section 2(g) of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, and told attorney general K K Venugopal that biometrics could never be invasive. “You (the government) cannot take blood and urine samples of individuals in the name of collecting biometrics for enrolling her/him with Aadhaar. It (biometrics) has to be non-invasive,” it said. |
The ruling BJP’s income soared 81% to Rs 1,034 crore in 2016-17 from Rs 570 crore in 2015-16, according to audit reports with the Election Commission. As per BJP’s annual audit report submitted on February 8, its total receipts for 2016-17 matched the receipts (Rs 1,033 crore) of all seven national parties, including BJP, put together in 2015-16. BJP’s income constituted roughly two-thirds of the combined income of Rs 1,559 crore for all national parties in 2016-17. So, BJP alone earned double of the other six national parties (Congress, BSP, Trinamool, CPM, CPI and NCP) put together in 2016-17. |
