| The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has been adjudged the overall best institution in India by the HRD ministry’s national ranking framework. Announcing the rankings at an event at the Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi today, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has been adjudged the best engineering college and the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) the best management institution. According to the national institutional ranking framework (NIRF), Delhi University’s Miranda House was the best college, premier healthcare institute AIIMS the best medical college and NLSIU-Bengaluru the best law school in the country. |

| The Supreme Court today refused to stay its March 20 order diluting certain provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The Court, however, will reconsider last month’s judgment at hearing after 10 days and asked parties to file their written submissions within two days. While hearing observations by attorney general K K Venugopal on a review petition filed by the Centre, the court said: “We are not against the Act. Innocent should not be punished.” The Centre had yesterday filed a petition seeking review of the apex court’s order banning automatic arrests and registration of criminal cases under the SC/ST Act. |
| The CBSE today decided to not hold a re-examination for the Class 10 mathematics course even though the question paper for the earlier test was leaked. “Consequent to the preliminary evaluation of the impact of reportedly leaked CBSE class 10 maths paper and keeping in mind the paramount interest of students, CBSE has decided not to conduct re-examination even in the states of Delhi, NCR and Haryana,” said education secretary Anil Swarup. Sources say that rigorous analysis will be done to check unusual variations in marks in the coming days to enable the CBSE to figure out which answer papers indicate a leak. |

| The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) today directed the information and broadcasting ministry to withdraw its press statement about the new rules on fake news. The ministry duly withdrew them. The PMO said issues to do with fake news should only be addressed in and by the Press Council of India (PCI), the regulatory body for print journalism. The government yesterday said the accreditation of a journalist could be permanently cancelled if the scribe is found generating or propagating fake news. The opposition and a whole host of journalists questioned the Centre’s new rules, saying it was trying to muzzle press freedom and suppress uncomfortable news about the government. |
| India has welcomed the United States’s decision to designate Hafiz Saeed’s political party Milli Muslim League (MML) as a terrorist outfit. “India welcomes the action taken by the US for designating the Milli Muslim League as an alias of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)… It vindicates India’s position that Pakistan has not taken effective action against terrorist groups and individuals,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said. India said the US action took cognizance of the fact that terrorists and entities are allowed to change names and continue to operate freely from territory under Pakistan’s control. |
