In her efforts to bring about a broad opposition unity, Mamata Banerjee met leaders on Wednesday, including UPA chief Sonia Gandhi. The meeting came against the backdrop of moves to form a federal front which was seen as “parallel” to Congress’s efforts to rally the opposition. The Mamata-Sonia meeting seems to indicate a convergence even as Trinamool seeks greater space for regional parties in states where they face BJP. The meeting with Sonia could mark the start of a conversation that acknowledges the need to accommodate Congress even as Banerjee seeks a more prominent role in national politics. Read more

India has said that Maldives’ engagement with China, Pakistan ‘too secretive’ for the country. The latest issue niggling India is Male’s decision to discuss with Islamabad a visit by Pakistan army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa without first bringing it to the notice of South Block. Despite its stated India First policy, the Yameen government has not bothered to take India into confidence on major issues in the spirit of mutual trust whether it’s the Chinese investments in the Maldives or the ocean observatory Beijing wants to build right under India’s nose. |
The Supreme Court has ruled that a stay on proceedings of a trial must not exceed six months. The SC ruled that lower courts could proceed after a six-month period, preventing accused from dragging on the trial. The order should reduce the probability of the maxim “justice delayed is justice denied” becoming the norm and aiding the accused in avoiding just desserts in a court of law. Prolonged trials can result in witnesses turning hostile or even dying and evidence being diluted — developments that frustrate victims and law enforcement agencies.

China has agreed to resume sharing hydrological data on Brahmaputra river with India. Beijing has stopped providing the data crucial to predict floods last year. “On the basis of humanitarian spirit and our shared will to develop bilateral ties we will continue with the cooperation on hydrological information cooperation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said. A team of officials of India’s Ministry of Water Resources held talks with their Chinese counterparts on the cooperation of trans-border rivers in the last two days at the Chinese city of Hangzhou. |
