Australia has abolished skilled expat workers’ visas popular with Indians. Instead of the subclass 457 visa category for skilled overseas workers, Australia has introduced a new Temporary Skill Shortage visa from March 18. Of the 90,000-odd holders of the 457 visas, 22% were Indians. New job entrants, including Indian students who have qualified from Australian universities, may find it more challenging to get a job as a minimum work experience of two years is required. Read more

India will become the third largest tourism economy in the next 10 years, a report has said. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) report also said India will add nearly 10 million jobs in the tourism sector by 2028. The WTTC, however, red-flagged the sector’s concerns over the three-level implementation of GST in the hospitality sector and said the government must bring in tax reforms to make India’s tourism sector more competitive with other countries in the region.

The CEO of UIDAI Ajay Bhushan Pandey has said that Aadhaar is blind to the purpose of authentication. UIDAI chief Ajay Bhushan Pandey sought to answer petitioners questioning Aadhaar’s constitutional validity on the ground that it violated citizens’ right to privacy. He said that the biometric data attached to each Aadhaar was safe from hacking as the storage facility was not connected to the internet.

Domestic gas price is set to hit two-year high from April 1. Consumers using CNG to run their vehicles and cooking gas (PNG) are set to pay more from next month as the benchmark price for natural gas produced from domestic fields is expected to hit a two-year high during the six-monthly revision due on April 1. The revision will raise the cost of manufacturing urea, which uses domestic gas as feedstock just like companies providing CNG and PNG services.

For the first time, All India Radio (AIR) may not cover Commonwealth Games. There are reports that Prasar Bharati might ask AIR to cancel its bookings at the Games. With AIR already having paid Rs 1.6 crore so far for broadcasting rights and booth bookings, such a late-stage decision would mean foregoing a major portion of the money. Prasar Bharati has been facing a funds crunch following problems with the I&B ministry and has had to dig into its reserves to pay salaries.
