All CCTV cameras at Apollo were turned off during the 75-day hospitalisation of Jayalalithaa, the hospital chairman revealed today. Dr Prathap C Reddy said that the cameras were switched off as the former Tamil Nadu chief minister was the only patient occupying the 24-bed intensive care unit. “They removed the cameras because they did not want everyone to be watching,” he told reporters. The Centre has removed the cap of Rs 10,000 per month on educational assistance given to the children of martyrs. The concession applies to the children of officers from the armed forces, ‘persons below officer rank’ missing in action, and those disabled or killed in action. This scheme covers around 3,400 children and entails an expenditure of around Rs 5 crore a year currently.
India today successfully flight-tested the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. Called the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile, BrahMos hit its designated target with pin-point accuracy in Rajasthan’s Pokhran at 8.42am today. Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated the DRDO for the successful fight test and said it will boost the country’s security.
Tweets criticising BR Ambedkar posted from a fake handle landed cricketer Hardik Pandya in soup today. A Rajasthan court directed Jodhpur police to file an FIR against the allrounder for allegedly insulting Ambedkar and hurting the sentiments of people. However, it turned out that the tweet came from a handle called @sirhardik3777 while Pandya’s official and verified handle is @hardikpandya7.
The US has incorporated the freeze on security aid to Pakistan in its $1.3 trillion spending bill. In January, the US had suspended about $2 billion in security aid to Pakistan for failing to clamp down on the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network terror groups and dismantle their safe havens. According to the legislation, any assistance to Pakistan may be made available only to support counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency capabilities in Pakistan.
