| KCR and Mamata Banerjee today discussed the formation of a federal front to take on the BJP and Congress in the 2019 LS polls. Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao said the so-called federal front would be an amalgamation of like-minded people who are determined to reinvent the nation’s political scenario. | The notices for no-confidence motion against the government could not be taken up in the Lok Sabha today due to noisy protests by several parties. Several opposition parties have pledged support for the no-confidence motion moved by the TDP and YSRCP, both of which are unhappy at Andhra Pradesh not being given special category status. The Lower House was adjourned for the day amid the din, with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan saying “since the House is not in order, I will not be able to bring it… I am sorry”. |
| The Karnataka cabinet today accepted an expert panel report favouring separate religious minority status for the Lingayat community. Law minister T B Jayachandra said it had accepted the recommendations of an expert panel set up by the state government on the issue. The move is being seen as a poll strategy of the Congress to divide the large Veerashaiva-Lingayat vote bank which traditionally favours the BJP. |
| Lalu Prasad was today convicted by a special CBI court in the fourth fodder scam case. CBI judge Shiv Pal Singh held guilty the 69-year-old RJD chief along with 18 others of criminal conspiracy, corruption and other charges. Another accused, Jagannath Mishra, also a former Bihar chief minister like Lalu, was found not guilty in this case. |
| Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has tendered more apologies, this time to Union minister Nitin Gadkari and Congress leader Kapil Sibal. Days after apologising to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Kejriwal apologised to Sibal and Gadkari for making unverified allegations of corruption against them. Following this, Kejriwal and Gadkari submitted a joint application before the court seeking withdrawal of the defamation case. |
