| The income tax department is “aggressively” pursuing the names that emerged in the Panama Papers, including that of Amitabh Bachchan. The I-T department also has dispatched a top-level officer to the British Virgin Islands, one of the tax havens, to access information, a senior official said. Bachchan has denied any wrongdoing, the official added. The tax department has launched 33 prosecutions linked to the names revealed in the Panama Papers and is probing others. |

| The former head of Gorakhpur-based BRD Medical College has said that he had written several letters to top officials requesting funds for oxygen cylinders. “I wrote at least three letters to the health department on July 3, 19 and August 1. I had attached reminders from the Lucknow-based vendor in my letters,” said Rajeev Mishra, who was suspended after 32 people lost their lives due to alleged disruption in oxygen supply. He claimed that there was no prompt action even after his requests. |
| Hizbul Mujahideen’s operational commander Yasin Itoo was killed in an encounter in Kashmir’s Shopian district yesterday. The encounter began on Saturday when security forces launched an operation against terrorists who had gathered in Awneera village in Shopian. While some terrorists escaped, three including Yasin were holed-up in a house next to a mosque. They were eventually killed by security forces and arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. |

| As many as 122 engineers have been sacked in connection with the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam job scam. An internal inquiry conducted on the orders of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court found that the recruitment process of the engineers was completed within one and a half months and in complete violation of norms. The nigam has, however, decided not to recover the expenses on salary and other facilities provided to the engineers. |
| The Centre has asked the states to detect and deport illegal migrants like Rohingyas, citing security concerns. In a communication to states on August 8, the home ministry said that the infiltration of (the Rohingyas) from Rakhine state of Myanmar into Indian Territory is a burden on the limited resources of the country. It added that illegal migrants infringe on the rights of Indian citizens and pose security threats as they are more vulnerable to get recruited by terrorist organisations. |
