| The 44 legislators of Gujarat Congress, who were lodged at a private resort near Bengaluru, flew back to Ahmedabad today. The Gujarat Congress had sent 44 of its MLAs to the resort on July 28 to fend off “poaching” attempts by the BJP, ahead of the August 8 Rajya Sabha polls, in which Ahmed Patel, the political secretary to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, is contesting. “We have the numbers. The BJP don’t have the numbers. We will see to it that Patel wins the poll,” said Congress spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil. |

| Pakistan’s ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif criticised the Supreme Court verdict that forced him to step down. “What can be a bigger joke with the nation, and with a prime minister of the country, than this?” Sharif said, referring to the court verdict, in his first news conference since his removal from office on July 28. “It was not a verdict over corruption or kickbacks or embezzlement in the state funds,” said Sharif. “Had it been so, I would have been very ashamed.” |
| One Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. “Acting on a tip-off about presence of terrorists in Samboora village, a joint cordon and search operations(CASO) was launched by 50 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Indian Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police,” a senior police official said. “As the cordon was being laid, the hiding terrorists fired upon the soldiers,” he said. The identity of the terrorist is yet to be confirmed. |

| About 400 senior executives of Cognizant accepted the voluntary separation package, said the company. The company initiated the voluntary separation package in May, offering up to nine months of salary as part of it to some of its top-level executives in the US and India. However, the company did not disclose the number of Indian executives who have accepted the offer. |
