| New registrations under the Goods & Services Tax (GST) crossed the 10 lakh mark, the revenue secretary Hasmukh Adhia tweeted yesterday. “Out of this 10-12 lakh, even if 8-9 lakh file returns there will be a substantial increase in revenues. It will also have benefits on the direct tax side and help to check evasion,” said N R Bhanumurthy, professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy. The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), the IT backbone of the new tax system, has also registered 86 lakh existing business and service providers. |

| A US delegation from the State Department visited New Delhi this week to discuss how India could plug all exposure to North Korea. Among the “suggestions” given to India were to limit and scale back its diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang. India’s exports to North Korea is about $110 million and in 2016, officials said, there was an over 30% drop in bilateral trade. In April this year, responding to UN resolutions, the Indian government had banned all trade (except food and medicines) with North Korea. |
| The country will witness the launch of two lunar missions from Indian soil early next year. The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) will launch its Chandrayaan-2 mission, an advanced version of its previous 2018 mission with the objective of deeper lunar surface probe, next year. Another mission by Team Indus, a group of space enthusiasts who want to unfurl the tricolour on the moon’s surface as part of a global lunar competition will also be launched early next year. |

| The railways is working on a project to discontinue providing blankets in AC coaches in some trains. The move to do away with blankets comes after the <a href=”http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/railways-plans-to-discontinue-providing-blankets-in-ac-coaches/articleshow/59827419.cms”>railways faced criticism </a>for giving untidy blankets to passengers. On a trial basis, the railways will increase the temperature in the AC coaches, from the current 19°C to 24°C, so that passengers don't shiver without blankets, an official said. According to initial estimates, the move is an economical option, considering that it takes Rs 55 to clean the bedroll while passengers are charged just Rs 22 for it. |
| The Centre is planning to set up five boarding schools for dalit girls in every state. As per the proposal with the social justice ministry, the government will open the boarding schools in educationally backward blocks with the largest SC population in the state. In the proposed schools, 70% seats will be reserved for SC girls and the rest would be open to other categories like general classes and the OBCs. The schools will provide education from Class VI to Class XII. |
