| Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif resigned after the Supreme Court found him guilty in the Panama Paper case. According to Pakistan media, Nawaz’s younger brother Shahbaz Sharif will be the next PM. The young Sharif is currently chief minister of powerful Punjab province. He would have to step down from that role and be elected to the National Assembly. That will require a party loyalist to resign from his seat in the national parliament, sparking a hasty vote that Shahbaz would contest on the PML-N ticket.

| The Nitish Kumar-BJP combine won the crucial floor test in the Bihar Assembly with a convincing margin of 131 votes. The RJD-Congress combine got 108 votes. Nitish-BJP needed 122 members’ support for a win in the 243-member House. “The mandate is to serve the people and not to profit. The people’s court is the biggest court and it is my duty to serve them but I can’t serve one family,” Kumar said in his 10-minute speech.

| The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking nod for terminating the 32-week-old pregnancy of a 10-year-old rape survivor. A bench comprising Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud took note of the report of the medical board set up by PGI (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) Chandigarh. Courts allow medical termination of pregnancy up to 20 weeks under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and can make an exception if the foetus is genetically abnormal.
