China will downsize its 2.3 million-strong military to under one million as part of a restructuring process. The People’s Liberation Army will increase the numbers of other services, including navy and missile forces, the PLA Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese military, reported.

Mithali Raj scripted history as she became the all-time leading run-getter in women’s one-day internationals. Mithali, who is leading India at the ICC Women’s World Cup in England, overtook Charlotte Edwards (5992) after scoring her 34th run against Australia in Bristol. The 34-year-old reached the landmark in her 183rd ODI, taking 164 innings – 16 less than Charlotte.

Consumer inflation in June eased to a new record-low of 1.54 per cent, driven by a drop in food and oil prices. In May, consumer price inflation stood at 2.18 per cent, which was also a record low. Estimates provided ranged from 3.85 percent to 4.0 percent. The RBI also lowered its headline inflation forecasts to a range of 2.0-3.5 per cent for the first half of fiscal year 2017-18 and 3.5-4.5 per cent in the second half, down from 4.5 per cent and 5.0 per cent, respectively.

A trillion-tonne iceberg, larger than the US state of Delaware, snapped off the West Antarctic ice shelf. Icebergs calving from Antarctica are a regular occurrence. But given its enormous size (5,800-square kilometre), it will be closely watched as it travels, for any potential risk to shipping traffic.
