The US yesterday designated Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin as a global terrorist. Just hours before Trump received Modi at the White House, the State Department designated Salahuddin, who hails from Kashmir and is based in Pakistan for the last 28 years, as a global terrorist. The US said that the Hizb chief “has committed, or poses a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism.” |
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei has equated the situation in Kashmir with that of Yemen and Bahrain. “Muslim world should openly support people of Bahrain, Kashmir, Yemen, etc and repudiate oppressors and tyrants who attacked people in Ramadan,” the Ayatollah tweeted as he tried to bring together the global Islamic community by identifying common enemies. |

The US Supreme Court yesterday partially reinstated Trump’s travel ban targeting citizens from six countries. The court, which narrowed the scope of lower court rulings that had completely blocked his March 6 executive order, said it would hear arguments in October on the lawfulness of one of Trump’s signature policies in his first months as president. |
Constitutional expert KK Venugopal is likely to replace Mukul Rohatgi as the attorney general. Official sources confirmed that Venugopal has emerged as the front-runner for the post and his name is likely to be announced after PM Narendra Modi’s return from the US. If confirmed, the 86-year-old will return as a law officer after a gap of 40 years. |
