| The Reserve Bank extended the scope of Banking Ombudsman Scheme under which banks could be penalised for misselling third party products. “RBI has widened the scope of its Banking Ombudsman Scheme 2006, to include deficiencies arising out of sale of insurance/mutual fund/other third party investment products by banks,” the apex bank said in a statement. A customer would also be able to lodge a complaint against banks for non-adherence to the RBI instructions with regard to mobile or electronic banking services. |

| The lynching of deputy superintendent of police Muhammad Ayub Pandith in Srinagar triggered widespread condemnation. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti termed the killing of Pandith as “shameful” and warned people of severe backlash if the police loses its patience. Terming the incident, “very unfortunate”, the director general of police S P Vaid said two people have been arrested so far in this incident and third one has been identified. He was stripped and lynched outside the historic Jamia Masjid by a frenzied mob on Friday afternoon. |
| Around 100 people are feared buried after a landslide smashed through a village in southwest China’s Sichuan Province Some 40 homes in the village of Xinmo were swallowed by the cascading debris after the side of a mountain collapsed, blocking a two kilometer stretch of river, state news agency Xinhua said. The news agency said that “part of a mountain” in the Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba had collapsed. |

| A youth was stabbed to death and his brother injured by a group of people in a train that accused them of carrying beef. “They started calling us names and said we were unpatriotic and then started hitting us after a dispute over a seat. They were pointing at a packet which had food and saying that we should not be allowed to sit since we were carrying beef,” said brother of deceased. Haryana DGP B S Sandhu, however, denied that the incident was the outcome of an argument over beef. “We have already arrested one of the accused. Police teams are investigating and others too will be arrested,” he told TOI. |
| Government announced the new list of 30 cities for development under the Centre’s Smart City Mission. The capital cities of Kerala, Gujarat, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Mizoram, Sikkim and the new capital of Chhattisgarh, Naya Raipur, were among 30 urban areas which were selected on Friday to be developed as smart cities.The latest announcement takes to 90 the number of cities selected for part financing by the Centre under the scheme. |
