| 19 people were killed and 50 injured in a blast at Ariana Grande’s concert in UK’s Manchester city. Police said the incident was being treated as a terrorist incident and that there were number of fatalities at the arena, which has a capacity of 21,000 people. A witness who attended the concert said she felt a huge blast as she was leaving the arena, followed by screaming and a rush as thousands of people trying to escape. A spokesperson for Ariana Grande, 23, said the singer was “okay”. |

Major Leetul Gogoi has been awarded by Army chief General Bipin Rawat for “his sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations as well as his presence of mind and initiative to prevent bloodshed” during the human shield episode in J&K’s Budgam district on April 9. The award brushes aside criticism that the act of Gogoi violated human rights and the Geneva Convention. |

| The Centre has released the calculations to show how the burden of indirect taxes will come down in the new regime. In case of smartphones, the government countered the claim of handset manufacturers and said smartphones currently attracted 2% central excise duty, while VAT rates varied from state to state and was in the 5-15% range. Further, medical devices will see a lower tax burden with the GST rate pegged at 12% instead of the current incidence of over 13%, which includes 6% central excise duty and 5% VAT. |
| A special CBI court has awarded jail term to three former coal ministry officials in connection with a Coalgate case. Former Union coal secretary H C Gupta, then joint secretary K S Kropha and former director K C Samaria were handed a two-year jail term with regard to allocation of Thesgora B/Rudrapuri coal block to Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Ltd (KSSPL). A fine of Rs 1 lakh was also imposed on each of the former government employees. |
