Nearly 3 decades after the Bofors scandal, the Indian Army is all set to induct the first modern 155mm artillery guns. The two howitzers, which will come in a chartered aircraft from the UK, will be taken to the Pokhran ranges for testing and “compilation of the firing tables” for subsequent use. The Army has not inducted a single 155mm artillery gun since the Bofors scandal brought down the Rajiv Gandhi government, and derailed all plans for technology transfer and indigenous manufacture. |

Defence minister Arun Jaitley reviewed the security situation in the Kashmir valley. Jaitley, who also holds the finance portfolio, chaired the security review meeting on Wednesday evening, which was also attended by newly-appointed Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra and Army chief General Bipin Rawat. He was briefed about the steps being taken to restore normalcy in the Valley, and various measures to strengthen the counter-infiltration grid along the LoC. |

The Central Pollution Control Board’s reply to an RTI query said the Ganga river along Haridwar is not even fit for bathing. The CPCB has said that water in Haridwar district fails almost all parameters of safety. Tests were done at 11 locations in Uttarakhand, from Gangotri to Haridwar, a distance of 294km along the river. The RTI filed sought details of water quality and locations from which samples are collected. |
Veteran Bollywood actress Reema Lagoo passed away yesterday night at the age of 59. After the senior actress complained of chest pain on Wednesday night, she was rushed to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital in Andheri where she breathed her last. The actress was also referred to as Bollywood’s favourite onscreen mother. |
