| The Centre decided to ban use of red beacon by VIPs and dignitaries from May 1. No one, including the President, PM, Chief Justice of India and state chief ministers, will be allowed to carry this symbol of ‘VIP culture’. Only emergency vehicles and enforcement agencies will be exempt. “People used to feel bad about people in power and others using red beacons on their vehicle. It’s a huge democratic decision,” Union minister Nitin Gadkari said. |

| The Delhi High Court said the Centre was taking all necessary steps for release of death row convict Kulbhushan Jadhav from Pakistan. “There cannot be any intervention by this court,” the bench said, adding that it does not want to direct the Centre to approach the International Court of Justice for Jadhav’s release. Indian High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale is expected to meet Pakistan’s foreign secretary Tehmina Janjua today to discuss the issue. |
| The Union Cabinet cleared a proposal of the Election Commission to procure paper trail machines for future elections. The decision comes in the wake of growing demands from opposition parties for holding all future elections using paper trail machines along with EVMs, to clear doubts about votes cast. The EC has sought Rs 3,174 crore for procuring over 16 lakh paper trail machines to cover all polling stations in the country. |
